Is it Spring yet???

So while I know that this is a food blog and not a gardening blog, a big part of my life is growing vegetables every summer. Since I think people should know more about where their food comes from, so my veggie adventures will be a part of this blog as well, since they will eventually go into recipes.

Anyway, with that said, I am really excited because I ordered seeds from Seed Savers Exchange this weekend, which is a company that specializes in heirloom vegetable and flower seeds. I got way more ambitious this year, and Hubby says he will help me build some raised beds to accommodate everything that I bought.

When I say I ordered a lot, I really did. I got corn, peas, 2 kinds of squash, 2 kinds of potatoes, beets, carrots, onions, and possibly some other things that I’m not remembering right now.

I think growing heirloom plants is important. Most of these are breeds that are rare or were almost lost forever, so I think that we should make a point to continue to grow old strains of plants. These are literally breeds that have been around since the late 1800’s, with seeds carefully saved from generation to generation. Not only are the vegetables that come from them about 10 times more delicious than regular breeds, but they usually are really gorgeous as well. Most everything I got comes in wild colors, such as the jade blue corn, black tomatoes, purple carrots, etc.

I already can’t wait! The bigger garden this year will be a challenge, but it will be worth it when we have lots of yummy pretty things to eat! And more than likely, I will be crying uncle and begging people to take some veggies at some point, so keep your ears open!
